National Purple Heart Day Honoring Service and Sacrifice

Every year on National Purple Heart Day we see photographs of the medal, lists of famous recipients, and the history behind its creation. All of that is important. But perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Purple Heart is that no one ever sets out to earn one.

Unlike many military decorations that recognize extraordinary achievement or acts of valor, the Purple Heart is different. It is awarded to those who were wounded or killed as a direct result of enemy action while serving our nation. It is not a medal earned through competition or nomination. It is a reminder of the cost of military service and the sacrifices made by those who answered the call.

Every Purple Heart represents a personal story. Some recipients returned home carrying lifelong physical or emotional wounds. Others never returned at all. Behind every medal is an individual who placed duty above personal safety, and behind every individual is a family whose life was changed forever.

The Air & Space Forces Association exists to support Airmen, Guardians, and their families while educating the public about aerospace power. National Purple Heart Day reminds us that behind every medal is a person, behind every person is a family, and behind every family is a story that deserves to be remembered.

Today we honor all Purple Heart recipients, many of whom are members and friends of AFA Palm Springs Chapter 134, with our gratitude, our respect, and our commitment to never forget the sacrifices they made in service to our nation.

Nov 12th Veterans Day Dinner & Concert

The City of Palm Springs Department of Parks & Recreation invites the community to join in honoring all veterans and active service members this Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Downtown Park (Museum Way & Belardo Road).

The evening begins with a complimentary dinner at 5 PM, followed by a concert at 7 PM featuring the K-Tel All-Stars — a celebration of music, camaraderie, and gratitude. This annual Veterans Day event is a meaningful way for the Palm Springs community to come together in appreciation of those who have served our nation in uniform. The Air & Space Forces Association Palm Springs Chapter encourages you to share this moment of thanks, and to remember that the freedoms we enjoy each day were secured by the dedication and sacrifice of our veterans.

Veterans Day – A Moment of Honor and Reflection

Today, we pause to recognize the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform and carried its responsibilities with courage, commitment, and sacrifice. Veterans Day is not simply a date on the calendar—it is a reminder that freedom has a cost, and that cost has been paid by generations who stepped forward when the country needed them most.

The image here was photographed yesterday at the Fields of Valor installation in Cathedral City. Among two thousand waving flags, each tribute tells a personal story. This one honors a Vietnam veteran who earned the Purple Heart—an unmistakable reminder of the human toll of service and the quiet strength that defines so many who return home carrying both visible and invisible wounds.

As we mark Veterans Day, AFA Palm Springs extends our gratitude to every veteran, from every era, and to the families who stood beside them. Whether you served overseas or stateside, in combat or in support, your service continues to shape the freedoms and security we depend upon today.

We invite our community to take a moment—today and every day—to reflect on that service, to thank a veteran, and to carry forward the respect they deserve.

“Rock the Museum” at the General Patton Memorial Museum

The General Patton Memorial Museum in Chiriaco Summit has introduced a new community art initiative titled “Talking Rocks.” This ongoing exhibit invites participants to pick up a rock at the museum, paint it in a patriotic theme, and return it for placement in the museum’s Memory Garden.

Each contribution will become a lasting part of the display, honoring the spirit of service, patriotism, and remembrance. Entries are accepted throughout the year, but those received before Veterans Day (November 11) will be placed in the garden during the museum’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. Rocks received afterward will continue to be added to the exhibit on an ongoing basis.

Participation in the program is free through November 12, and all are encouraged to contribute. This initiative provides a meaningful way for individuals, families, and organizations to express appreciation for our nation’s veterans and first responders.

Flag Day: A Tribute to the Stars and Stripes

June 14 marks Flag Day, a time to reflect on the meaning and legacy of the American flag. On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of the United States flag: thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field, symbolizing a new constellation. Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national day of recognition, Americans have observed Flag Day to honor the emblem that represents our unity, resilience, and commitment to freedom.

The image above, titled “The American Flag”, comes from an 1862 piece of Civil War-era sheet music with lyrics by Rev. J. B. Dickson and music by L.S.D. Rees. It was published during a time when the flag’s meaning was being tested on the battlefield and reaffirmed in the hearts of Americans. The figure, reminiscent of Columbia or Liberty, carries the Stars and Stripes with determination and dignity, a powerful representation of the ideals that continue to guide our nation and its defenders.

This illustration is part of the Library of Congress’s extensive collection of patriotic sheet music, much of it tied to the Civil War era. The cover art from these pieces not only celebrates the flag but also offers insight into the cultural and emotional power it held throughout American history.

As members of the Air & Space Forces Association Palm Springs, we remember that the flag is more than a symbol—it is a charge to uphold the values it represents. Whether it flies above a base, across a parade field, or drapes a final salute, the American flag stands as a living tribute to service and sacrifice.
